THE HISTORY OF CAR TRANSMISSIONS

Alfred Horner Munro is the inventor of the transmission. He invented it in 1991. Howard Frederick Hobbs created the first car transmission. He did accomplish this in 1932.

The different kinds of transmissions are manual, automatic, and CVT transmissions. A manual transmission shifts gears by you pushing the clutch and using the stick lever. Automatic transmission shifts gear automatically while you are driving! Finally, a CVT transmission can shift gears during high speeds of rough driving.

Transmission history over the years has evolved a long way from where they are today. In the beginning, there were only manual transmissions. Back when all the cars were manual, there were no other options. They were simply cut meshing gears inside a case with some gear oil.

The second transmission built for cars was the synchromesh transmission in 1919. Earl A Thompson invented it. This transmission was still manual, but t wale different.

Then came the automatic transmission. The first person to invent an automatic transmission was Alfred Horner Munro. He created the automatic transmission in 1921. So, of course, our automotive message has evolved from what Alfred left it. Other car companies have made transmissions for their cars, but Alfred Munro made his for General Motors, or GM as we might know them.

After that was the manumatic transmission in the 1950s. Then, the sequential manual gearbox transmission. Which was invented in 1996. And to top it, the dual-clutch message in 1939 was created by Adolphe Kégresse.

HOW DOES A TRANSMISSION WORK?

Your car’s transmission is one of the essential devices in your vehicle. It converts the power from the engine to the wheels. There are many different kinds of car transmissions. Some are automatic transmissions; some are manual transmissions. A manual uses the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel, to take the torque from your engine, while an automatic converts energy through to your flex plate, and gearbox, while both apply power to the wheels! Call us for all of your Auto Repair in Chico, CA!

Manuals are slowly being faded out. Nowadays, very few cars come with accurate stick-shift transmissions. Most manuals are now in the form of a paddle shifter or dual-clutch transmission. Have you ever wondered how Mathewson works? The process is different depending on whether or not you have an automatic transmission or and manual transmission.

Traditional manual transmissions have a clutch pedal and a shifter. This allows the driver to manually change gears instead of the car doing it for you. Manual transmissions have equipment consisting of gears, two shafts, and input and output shafts. First, the driver has to select the proper bag for that clutch. The clutch is sandwiched between the flywheel and the pressure plate.

What does transmission fluid do for a car? Well, transmission fluid is vital. It lubricates the mechanical parts, helps maintain fluid pressure in your vehicle, cools your transmission so that it doesn’t get too hot, helps prevent oxidation, conditions your gaskets, and prevents rust from forming on your car.

GM FLUID

The first transmission fluid was a special lubricant GM. It was used in a 1940 Hydra-Matic 4-speed transmission. “This transmission fluid was only available at Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac dealerships.”

Nine years later, GM made another type of transmission fluid. The class A transmission fluid. Ten years later, in 1959, Ford made their transmission fluid.

DEX FLUID

DEX transmission fluid is another kind of transmission fluid! DEX transmission fluid is found in cars that have automatic transmissions. DEX transmissions and DEX transmission fluid were invented in 1967.

TYPE F

As you can tell, transmission fluid does a lot. But did you know that there are multiple kinds of transmission fluid? Well, there is! One kind of transmission fluid is type F fluid. Type F fluid was commonly used in the ’70s. This kind of transmission fluid didn’t have friction modifiers. (Friction modifiers help to reduce friction on lubricated parts.

CVT FLUID

CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. One type of transmission fluid is CVT. The CVT transmission is the most common transmission being produced today. In 1879, the first CVT transmission was invented.

Milton Reeves designed CVT transmissions. Milton had over 100 patents for all of his inventions. Reeves built the muffler, the transmission, the busses, and more! Milton died in 1925. Unfortunately, he only lived for 60 years!

It was produced under Subaru. The first car to have a CVT transmission was the 1958 DAF 600. Although they’d been around for a long time, CVT transmission became increasingly popular in the later 1980s.
