The museum is home to two permanent collections—The Reed Applegate Collection and Maria Alguilar Collection—and schedules themed exhibitions from Northern California artists throughout the year. Its community service includes many outreach programs for children, families, and artists.

The Museum of Northern California Art provided eight Pop Up Museums in the north state to inspire residents of all ages with exciting exhibitions of wonderful art created by artists from Northern California as monca continued its long-term planning and fundraising for the 900 Esplanade Building renovation.
