What are glow plugs?

Glow plugs are an automotive heating device used in Diesel engines. A glow plug’s job is to aid the diesel engine in starting. Plugs are more vital on cold days.

Plugs are metal, pencil-shaped, 1/4 x 32 thread, automotive devices that emit light in order to aid diesel engines. Plugs have a similar heating element to a toaster.

Glow plug history

Glow plugs were invented in 1929. The company DENSO made the first Diesel plugs. The first glow plugs were very thick. They also had high-temperature capability. Normally, these glow plugs would require low voltage levels to operate properly.

In the 1980s, new plugs were invented. These plugs were called “fast glow plugs”. These glow plugs were able to heat, and start up a diesel engine in a total of ten seconds!

In the late 90s, all plugs were used in prechamber diesel engines. This meant- that plugs and injectors would all fit into the prechamber instead of the engine head.

How long do glow plugs last?

On average, plugs last 100,000 miles. During this period, they will slowly deteriorate because of wear and tear. The good news, plugs are long-lasting. Meaning; that you won’t have to worry about them as much as your other automotive features.

Why do glow plugs fail?

Most plugs last to their estimated due date. If by chance, they don’t, it could be because of the engine overheating, pistons are damaged, your valves are broken, or plugs erosion. These are all the most common reasons that plugs would fail.

Erosion could be caused by injectors dripping down onto the plugs, causing them to slowly deteriorate. Also, if all of your plugs magically fail at the same time, it is because something is going on in the engine department of your vehicle.
