Chico State University, also known as Chico State, is a public university that is known for its high-value programs, vibrant student community, and engaged faculty who help students in their professional and personal lives. It is the second oldest campus in the California State University system, having been founded in 1887. There are 126 bachelor’s degree programs and 35 master’s degree programs at the institution. The history of Chico State begins with  General John Bidwell, who gave 8 acres (3.2 ha) of land from his cherry orchard to the city on June 24, 1887. The first cornerstone was put down on July 4, 1888. The 90 enrolled students were welcomed on September 3, 1889.

The U.S. News & World Report in 2023, claims that: Chico State was named 13th in “Best Colleges for Veterans” in the News & World Report 2023 college rankings. In the United States, Chico State is ranked 335th among 650 institutions of higher learning. It was rated 68th in the West, 73rd for “Best Value,” and 113th among all public institutions by Forbes America’s Top Colleges list in 2019.
