What is a BMW?
Before BMW got its name, it was called Rapp Motorenwerke. Rapp was located in the Bavarian capital. Rapp became BMW in 1917. They changed their logo, their name, and their products. In 1959 the company switched over to making aircraft engines.
BMW’s first plane engine was built in April 1917. They stopped making plane engines in 1959 because their factories had been blown up during the war.
The first aircraft they made was a straight-six six-engine plane that was called the BMW llla. Sadly, BMW aircraft productions would soon end. During the first war, BMW’s aircraft facility was bombed.
BMW only got around to making a few air crafts before they got bombed. They were able to make the BMW M, and the BMW M1. However, they made about 100 of these kinds of planes, due to the need for warcraft during the time.
BMW’s first motorcycle was the R32, invented in 1921. It reached a high speed of 171 miles per hour! This held the world record for nearly 14 years!
After the war, German aircraft were banned from being produced. So, they decided to use the leftover aircraft parts for their motorcycles. And that’s how it all began!
The MV Agusta F4 RR 312 is BMWs fastest motorcycle. It has an engine of 1078cc and can reach 193 miles per hour. Today, BMW still makes, and races motorcycles!
The first car that BMW made was the 3/15. The 3/15 was made in 1928. They would often call the 3/15 “Dixi”. It took Dixi 27 seconds to reach a speed of 62 miles per hour! Dixi’s top speed was 86 miles per hour.
BMW began to make a proto-type all-electric car in 1991. Of course, it had some problems that would make it an unreliable car. For instance, the car could not hold a charge. It would die very quickly and wouldn’t get people very far.
BMW repair & How long do BMW last?
How long are BMWs made to last? Well, on average, your BMW should be retired when it has about 200,000 miles. At this point, your BMW may have reached a repair that would cost more than the car’s actual value.
The most common reason that BMWs break down is because of overheating. One cause of overheating is because of coolant leaks. A cracked coolant reservoir, a faulty radiator cap, a leaky water pump, a damaged hose, a bad hose clamp, a warped head gasket, a troublesome expansion tank, or a hole in the radiator, are all potential causes of overheating.
The reason that BMW commonly has coolant leaks is because of its design. BMWs are made with plastic coolant connectors to help try and help regulate heat better. Because of this, coolant is able to seep through more easily.
Each BMW should last you over 5 years. But, this will only happen if the proper maintenance is taking place. Oil changes every 15,000 miles, keeping up on your A and B services. All of these are the ways to keep your BMW lasting longer.
The BMW with the most miles ever was the 1986 BMW 535i. This BMW reached 563,000 miles. Considering that most BMWs only get to around 200,000 to 250,000 miles, this is great!
“It depends. With proper maintenance and especially if owned by an enthusiast, it can provide decades of reliable service. Those that are going to last are most likely built before 2006 with port injection engines and fewer electronics.
This is mine, a 2001 BMW e39 530i with almost 391,000km. Still runs great and drives like no other car on the road today. I’m looking forward to it reaching 425,000km before considering anything else.”
